The first part of the frame your should build is the gunnels. These are the upper edges of the side of the canoe. They form the shape of the canoe as seen from the top. Glue and clamps can be used to attach the ends of the two sides together. A temporary thwart can be placed between the two sides to give the gunnels their shape. A thwart is a cross-piece that is eventually used as a seat in the canoe. Once the gunnels are properly shaped and fastened together the permanent thwarts can be fitted into place. These need to be sturdy as they will help hold the canoes shape. They can be fastened to the gunnels with screws.

Next you will need to build the stem pieces, ribs and finally the longitudinals. The stem pieces are for the ends of the canoe. They are the part of the canoe that cuts through the water. The ribs are the structural members which run from the keel to the gunnels. The keel is a piece of wood that runs along the bottom of the canoe just like a longitudinal. Longitudinals are structural members that run between the two ends of the canoe perpendicular to the ribs.

Canoe Designs of The Past

Today the canoe is a popular recreational boat used throughout the world. The canoe design is generally that of a small narrow boat. It is most often propelled by a paddle with one or two occupants. Canoes are used for racing, touring and whitewater adventuring. They have a long history and were a very important means of transportation for native indians and early explorers of North America.

Some of the earliest canoe designs were of the dugout and birch bark varieties. The birch bark canoe consisted of a wooden frame covered with the bark of a birch tree. This was used canoe design was light weight and could easily be carried around non-navigable sections of the route being traveled. However because of its sturdy construction and shape it could be used to transports large loads even in shallow waters. It was easy to repair because the material for this purpose was always available.

The wood and canvas canoe is another important type of canoe of that time period. It was similar to the birch bark canoe in structure. The canvas covering the wood frame was treated with a waterproofing agent such a paint, to make the vessel more water tight. It appeared in Eastern Canada and the United States during the 19th century.

Eventually the canoe became more of a source of recreation than a means of transporting supplies and people over long distances. Today people enjoy them for adventuring and camping. There are even specialized canoes for whitewater tricks and play boating.
